What is Dragon Fruit? / Types of Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruit grows on the Hylocereus cactus, also known as the Honolulu queen, whose flowers only open at night. This cactus is native to Mexico and Central America, but is now found all over the world. Other names for dragon fruit include pitaya, pitahaya, and strawberry pear.

The two most common types of dragon fruit have bright red skin with green scales that look like a dragon–hence the name. Most of the dragon fruit you’ll see has white pulp with black seeds, but you may find a variety with red pulp and black seeds. There’s also yellow dragon fruit with yellow skin, white pulp, and black seeds.

This exotic-looking fruit is delicious, with a taste that some people describe as a cross between a pear and a kiwi.

Dragon fruit is a good source of fiber, iron, and magnesium, and is very low in calories. It also contains several antioxidants. It can aid in digestion too.

You can make a dragon fruit berry smoothie with a mix of berries, or choose your favorite berries. Today we’re using blackberries.ย

This recipe also includes kale. Kale is high in nutrients, but low in calories, loaded with antioxidants, and high in vitamin C.

Blackberries are a great choice for your smoothies because they are high in fiber and vitamin C and help strengthen the immune system. They are also great for skin, bones, and may even help your memory.

But, as we mentioned, feel free to use whatever you like best.

One note about this dragon fruit blackberry smoothie — the dragon fruit and blackberries both have little seeds, so the texture won’t be pefectly “smooth.” If that bothers you, blend it a little longer until the seeds are completely broken down.

Where to Buy Fresh Dragon Fruit

Look for dragon fruit in your grocery store’s produce section near the other exotic and tropical fruits (like papaya and passion fruit). Fresh dragon fruit may be difficult to find, especially at certain times of the year.

I often use frozen fruit for my smoothies. It’s super convient, and you don’t have to worry about anything spoiling before you get to it. You can find frozen dragon fruit at Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target, and other stores.ย
