Coming up on a move? Youโ€™re in luck! Iโ€™m sharing my top four tips for moving day that will help make sure everything runs smoothly. These are must-have tricks and tips, even for people who think they may be experienced movers (Iโ€™m talking to you, military families)!

4 Tips for Moving Day to Help Everything Run Smoothly

4 Tips for Moving Day

One room at a time

If you want to stay organized during your move, then handle things one room at a time. Start by going room to room and decluttering.

There’s no reason to move what you don’t need, so decluttering will make the entire moving process quicker and easier. Make a trip to donate all of your gently used items, and then throw away what you don’t want to take with you or donate.

After youโ€™ve hauled away the things that donโ€™t serve a purpose in your life, youโ€™re ready to pack the things you want moved. This process is also best accomplished one room at a time. Start in a room with the items you use least often, like a guest room. You want the last items you pack to be the things you will need immediately once you’ve arrived in your new home–think towels and toiletries.ย

Meticulously label your boxes

With a little effort now, you can make unpacking go as smoothly as possible! Label all of your boxes. Have a box (or more than one) specifically for the things you will need right away when you get to your new house, and seal it with brightly-colored duct tape.

A great way to make everything easy to unload from the truck is to have different colored tape for each room. Draw up a little map of your house with color-labeled rooms that coordinate with the tape on the boxes. If you have help unloading your things, this will allow the movers to seamlessly place boxes in the rooms you want them in. Then you can focus on the unpacking and putting away!

Hire someone to do the heavy lifting

While same-day services are available, it is best to organize help ahead of time. Make sure you call experienced movers, and let them know what services you need from them. They can help you with every aspect of your move. Want them there at 8 AM to start packing up your house and loading the U-haul? No problem. Need them to move a pool table? This is what moving companies are for. They’ll make this stressful time so much easier! You can even hire movers to pack up the house, load the truck, unload the truck, and stage your furniture.ย

Cleaning after a move

If you hire movers, you can focus on the move-out cleaning. Have the movers load the truck with one roomโ€™s boxes at a time, and you can deep clean the rooms one by one.

Start with the room furthest from the front door, and by the time the truck is packed, youโ€™ve also made it to the front door! No need to double back to re-clean a room that was walked through after you had cleaned it.ย

While moving may never be fun, these tips for moving day are sure to help you move with much less stress than doing everything by yourself on the fly.

Let me know if you use any of these four tips, and tell me how they worked for you, and if you have any more tips, we’d love for you to share them by leaving a comment below.
