Here’s a fun, frugal, and easy project anyone can make. These do-it-yourself decoupage tile coasters make perfect little gifts too.
ย
The next time youโre at the hardware store, pick up some plain ceramic tiles (they’re so inexpensive), and transform them into stylish coasters with your favorite decorative paper.
ย
This project is totally customizable. With so many different scrapbook papers to choose from, you can make these for holidays or to fit any decor or theme.
ย
We made “road trip” coasters, a great gift for the travel lover in your life. (Check out our gift guide for travellers too.)
ย
I think this would be a perfect project for a “girls night in” or birthday party. Follow the tutorial below to make your own set.
ย
ย
Decoupage Tile Coasters
Supplies:ย
- 4×4 tiles — Pick them up online here or from your local hardware store (as many as you’d like to make)ย
- Scrapbook paper or napkins (one-ply) of your choice (If you’d like to use a travel theme similar to what we’re showing here, try this map paper.)
- Mod Podgeย
- Scissorsย
- Pencilย
- Foam brushย
- Feltย
- Glue gunย
- Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer
Instructions:ย
- Trace the tile onto the back of the scrapbook paper, and cut out the squares. Do the same with the felt pieces.
- Brush Mod Podge onto the tile, and glue the scrapbook paper to the top of each tile.ย
- Next, brush Mod Podge onto the top of the scrapbook paper. Allow to dry. (Make sure to smooth out any air bubbles underneath the paper.)ย
- Glue the felt to the underside of the tiles with hot glue. (Note: To make this project child-friendly, use regular glue.)
- When the coasters are dry, you can seal them by spraying on a coat of Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer.ย
- If you’re giving these decoupage tile coasters as gifts, just stack four of them, and tie with ribbon–you don’t even need gift wrap!

Can they be used with coffee mugs though?
Teresa
The acrylic sealer mentioned in the directions (or another sealer of your choice) helps these to stand up to moisture and heat. I wouldn’t purposely get them very wet, but using them with a coffee mug should be fine if they are sealed.
