Halloween is just around the corner, and this is one of the easiest spooky treats we make at our house. Plain chocolate milk turns into ghost chocolate milk with a swipe of marshmallow fluff and a black Sharpie. It takes just four supplies and about 10 minutes, and kids can do almost every step themselves.
It’s perfect for Halloween parties, movie nights, classroom treats, or a fun after-school surprise.

Why Kids Love This Ghost Chocolate Milk
The fun part is the “reveal.” While the cup is empty, the fluff just looks like a white smudge. Once you pour in the chocolate milk, the dark background makes the ghost pop right out. Every kid can draw their own face, so no two ghosts look alike, and that also makes it easy to tell whose cup is whose at a party.
Let’s take a look at the simple how-to.
How to Make Ghost Chocolate Milk
What You’ll Need
- Marshmallow fluff (also sold as marshmallow creme). One jar makes plenty of ghosts.
- Chocolate milk, store-bought or homemade. Darker chocolate milk makes the ghost stand out more.
- Clear plastic cups. Smooth-sided cups work best for spreading the fluff and drawing.
- Black Sharpie, used on the outside of the cup only.
- Optional: fun Halloween-themed straws and napkins for serving.
Step 1: Make the ghost. Scoop a generous spoonful of marshmallow fluff and spread it on the inside wall of the cup in a rounded ghost shape. You can make one big ghost or two smaller ones per cup.
Step 2: Draw the face. Use the Sharpie to draw two eyes and an “O” mouth on the outside of the cup, right over the fluff.
Step 3: Pour and serve. Slowly pour cold chocolate milk into the cup, aiming away from the ghost so it stays put. Add a straw and serve right away.
Tips for the Best Ghosts
- Spread it thick. A thin layer of fluff looks patchy once the milk goes in. A thicker, solid layer gives you a bright white ghost.
- Use cold milk. Warm drinks soften the fluff and your ghost can slide down or melt away.
- Pour slowly and to the side. A fast pour aimed at the ghost can smear it.
- Serve soon after pouring. The fluff will soften if you wait too long.
- Let kids do the faces. Draw the faces before pouring, while the cups are dry and easy to hold.
Fun Variations and Swaps
- Dairy-free: Use chocolate oat milk or almond milk.
- Allergy note: Most marshmallow creme contains egg whites, so check the label. Vegan marshmallow creme is available if you need it.
- Orange ghosts: Use orange-tinted milk or an orange drink for a different look. Any dark or bright drink works, but plain white milk will hide the ghost.
- Reusable glasses: Skip the Sharpie and use a dry-erase or washable glass marker on the outside instead.
- Grown-up version: Try it with iced coffee or a chocolate protein shake.
Making Ghost Milk for a Party or Classroom
I used to love to volunteer on party days at my son’s school, and this made the perfect Halloween party treat!
To make a big batch, set up the cups assembly-line style. Spread the fluff in all the cups first, then let the kids draw faces. Pour the milk right before serving.
For classroom parties, write each child’s name under their ghost with the Sharpie.

Ghost Chocolate Milk FAQ
Will the marshmallow fluff mix into the milk?
Not if you pour gently and use cold milk. The fluff sticks to the cup wall. Kids can eat it with a spoon once the milk is gone. (And, they might even ask you for a spoonful of fluff to eat on its own!)
Is it safe to use a Sharpie?
The marker goes on the outside of the cup only, so it never touches the drink.
Can I use hot chocolate?
Hot drinks melt the fluff, so the ghost won’t hold its shape. Stick with cold chocolate milk for this one.
