What to Put on a Charcuterie Board

I know you’ve seen charcuterie boards all over the internet and maybe at get-togethers you’ve attended. They make entertaining so easy. If you’re wondering what to put on a charcuterie board, you’re in the right place. We have 25 terrific examples for you below.

What is a charcuterie board?

Before we dive into our charcuterie board examples, what is a charcuterie board? It’s more than just putting some cheese and meat on a tray or a platter. It’s taking the time to artfully arrange meats, cheeses, fruit, nuts, and bread or crackers for quick and easy hors d’oeuvres.

What to put on a charcuterie board

So, what exactly to put on a charcuterie board? You can follow this template as a guide, but feel free to add or subtract and use your own creativity.

Start with a board or platter–a cutting board will do, but you can find charcuterie boards online or in stores too. They come in every size, shape, and material. Next, choose small bowls to hold nuts, olives, spreads, and jams, and scatter them on the board. Your other items will be arranged around them.

Choose a variety of cured meats and a variety of cheeses. As you choose the cheese, think about adding different textures and flavors–from hard cheeses to soft cheeses, and mild cheeses to sharp cheeses.

Next, add bread and/or crackers. Rye or French baguette slices are good bread choices. Choose crackers that will hold up well to toppings and spreads, like Triscuits or any other of your favorite crackers.

Add nuts, olives or pickles, and in-season fruit. Choose fruit that will give some color to your charcuterie board. Decorative sprigs of greenery also add color–think herbs, edible flowers, or even evergreen cuttings.

Spreads and jams that pair well with the choices you’ve made so far come next–perhaps honey or plum jam? Don’t forget to add nuts, which can include candied nuts.

Charcuterie board themes

You can also build your charcuterie platter around a theme. Some of the boards we’re featuring have a distinct theme. This can be a holiday, cuisine from a certain country, a color palette, desserts, and more! Here are some more charcuterie board ideas to get you thinking–
