Moving to a new home is exciting, but also (let’s be real) super stressful. There’s so much you need to, from packing your belongings and loading the moving containers, to connecting utilities at your new home, forwarding mail, and getting the kids set up in a new school—and that’s not everything. Let’s just say there’s a lot to think about!

Thankfully, there are ways to make a move, whether across town or across the country, a bit easier. With a little know-how, moving doesn’t have to be so taxing.

In this guide, we’ll discuss ways to plan your move with confidence. With a few handy tips and tricks, you can turn an often chaotic process into a smooth transition.

What to Know When Hiring a Mover + Calculating Moving Costs by Cubic Feet

Start Early and Stay Organized

The key to a successful move is starting early and staying on task. So, how do you keep procrastination at bay? You create a schedule. Use it to lay out everything you need to do in the weeks leading up to the big day.

This can include a thorough decluttering that includes selling and/or donating what you don’t need. You can also pack up the items you don’t use on a regular basis, call utility companies, and change your address with the post office, among other things.

Knowing step-by-step what needs to be done and checking those items off your list can reduce stress and keep you on track. Make a list on paper or use calendar and reminder apps (whatever works for you) to ensure everything goes as planned.

Choose a Moving Service

Of all the decisions you need to make when relocating, choosing the right moving service is top-of-the-list important. While traditional movers may be the best option for some, they may not work for you.

If you prefer that your belongings aren’t packed by others (who may not be as careful as you are), consider using storage and moving containers. These containers allow you to pack and load them at your own pace. And, with this option, you aren’t tied to the schedule of the mover.

These storage containers can be transported to your new home when you’re ready and then picked up when you’ve unloaded them.

Pack Efficiently and Safely

Packing up an entire houseful of belongings is possibly the most difficult part of the relocation process—but with a sound plan, you can get everything to your new place safely.

Start by getting rid of items that you no longer need or don’t want to take to your new home. As we’ve mentioned, you can use this opportunity to declutter, and sell, donate, or give away items that have been gathering dust.

Then, it’s time to really get to work. Be sure to wrap and secure breakables, and pack them efficiently. Use sturdy boxes and heavy-duty packing tape.

As you pack, write the lists of contents on the boxes to know what goes where. By labeling boxes clearly and keeping a detailed inventory, you can streamline the process and avoid the stress of searching for misplaced items.

Now you’re ready to load up your moving container or let the movers take over from here.

Unpack Strategically

Once you’ve made it to your new digs, unpacking strategically can ease the transition.

Start by prioritizing essentials, like kitchenware and bedding, to ensure you can cook and rest comfortably from day one.

Tackle one room at a time, beginning with the most frequently used spaces, to create a sense of order and accomplishment. This methodical approach allows you to settle in smoothly, turning your new house into a cozy, organized home.

Preparing for a Long-Distance Move With Young Children

Take Time to Settle In

Moving to a new home is about more than just physical logistics. Take some time to explore. Introduce yourself to the neighbors, and check out the amenities at your new place.

Make your new space feel more like home by unpacking some of your favorite things and creating at least one relaxing and comfortable space right away. You’ll get there with the rest—”rest” being the operative word.

Wrapping Up

Moving to a new home is always a daunting process, but with thoughtful planning and a few practical strategies, it doesn’t have to be quite so overwhelming. By starting early and staying organized, you can simplify the process.

Efficient and safe packing, coupled with strategic unpacking, ensures your belongings arrive and you get settled into your new home smoothly.

Finally, remember to take the time to explore your new surroundings and make your space feel like home. With these tips, you can transform the chaos of moving into an exciting new fresh start. Welcome home!
