Ready to turn your spring cleaning into green cleaning? All you need to do is add some sustainable methods and products to your cleaning routine. Green cleaning is the process of using cleaning products and methods that have fewer toxins and that are safer for both people and the planet.

Vinegar, essential oils, and citrus are all products that are consumable and fall under the term green cleaning.

If you don’t know where to start, here are four green cleaning tips for your home.

Why Choose Sustainable Cleaning?

When using regular cleaning products, harmful chemicals and antibacterials are released into the air and your surfaces. Using green cleaning products is healthier for you and the planet, ensuring that you, your family and your pets are safe. Eco-conscious products are also naturally produced, recyclable, or reusable, which means they have a lower environmental impact.

Green Cleaning Tips for Your Eco-Friendly Home

1. Incorporate Everyday Items

You’ve had sustainable cleaning products in your home all along and didn’t even know it! Lemons, baking soda, and vinegar are three all-natural and effective cleaning agents. These agents are also child-safe and pet-friendly.

Try making a DIY cleaning spray using lemon and white vinegar. Just combine lemon rinds and white vinegar in a glass container. Let these ingredients soak together for at least a week. Once you’ve hit the one-week mark, strain, and pour the mixture into a reusable spray bottle. Be sure to dilute the mixture with water before using it.

2. Use Essential Oils

We all love a good scented candle, but with the use of essential oils, there’s no need for a candle or a room spray. Essential oils are a great way to naturally scent your home without the release of harsh chemicals into your home. They are not only beneficial when it comes to the scent but also for their therapeutic purposes. For example, eucalyptus oil can be used to help cleanse the air in your home, while also supporting your respiratory system and promoting clear breathing.

You can even create your own air freshener at home with the use of your favorite essential oil, baking soda, and water. Start by combining one tablespoon of baking soda and five to six drops of essential oils. Ensure the oil you include is safe for both pets and children. (Essential oils such as peppermint and clove may not be suitable.) After you’ve combined those ingredients, pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Dilute the mixture by filling the rest of the bottle with water. Give it a good shake before using.

3. Invest in Reusable Containers

The next time you are out shopping for cleaning supplies, look for products or brands with reusable containers. This will reduce the excess plastic cleaning supplies that you’ll have to throw away. Some cleaning products may also have a refillable option.

If you’re looking to store your DIY cleaning solutions, purchase reusable bottles and containers. Not only does this reduce waste, but it is also a cost-effective option.

4. Use Sustainable Products (Here’s How to Spot Them)

There are a few ways to spot a sustainable cleaning product either by the label, the ingredients, or the packaging. The label should clearly explain how the product is considered eco-friendly or sustainable.

When looking at the ingredients, they should be free of any chemicals, artificial scents, and coloring. Instead, the products should be made from organic materials. The packaging should have brief instructions on how to reuse, recycle, or compost the packaging materials.
