These easy Red, White, and Blue Flag Cookies come together with just two ingredientsโ€”and theyโ€™re as fun to make as they are to eat!

Red, White, & Blue Flag Cookies

Looking for a simple, festive treat for your next patriotic celebration? These Red, White, and Blue Flag Cookies are the perfect way to sweeten up any party! With just sugar cookie dough and red, white, and blue M&Ms, youโ€™ll have a batch of colorful cookies ready in no time.

Whether youโ€™re hosting a Fourth of July bash, heading to a Memorial Day barbeque, or celebrating just becauseโ€”these cookies are always a hit.

What a fun twist on the classic sugar cookie! As soon as they come out of the oven, you press red, white, and blue M&Ms on top to create a mini American flag. The candies melt into the cookie, just a little, and stick perfectly.

These flag cookies are colorful, eye-catching, and incredibly easy to make. You’ll definitely want to have the kids help too!

When to Serve Them

These American flag cookies are great for:

  • The Fourth of July
  • Memorial Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Labor Day
  • Watching the Olympics
  • Superhero-themed birthday parties
  • Or anytime you want to show off your patriotic spirit!

What Youโ€™ll Need

Red, White, & Blue Flag Cookies

You only need two ingredients!

  • 1 roll (or batch) of sugar cookie dough
Use store-bought for convenience, or go homemade if you prefer baking from scratch.

  • Red, white, and blue M&Ms
Look for the patriotic mix in stores around the summer holidays, or check online at Amazon here.

How to Make Patriotic Flag Cookies

Hereโ€™s how to bring this sweet idea to life:

  • Preheat the oven
Set your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC), and let it warm up while you prep the dough.

Red, White, & Blue Flag Cookies

  • Slice the cookie dough
For store-bought dough, cut into ยฝ-inch thick rounds. If you’re using homemade dough, roll it into balls and flatten slightly.

  • Bake
Place cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced out a bit. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the edges are golden.

  • Cool slightly
Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for about two or three minutes.

Red, White, & Blue Flag Cookies

  • Decorate while warm
Now the fun part! Gently press the M&Ms on top to create the shape of the American flag. (Use our photos as a guide.)
Start with a blue square in the top left corner, then add red and white stripes to finish the flag look.

  • Let the cookies cool completely
Transfer the cookies to a wire rack. The candies will set as the cookies firm up.

Perfect for Every Patriotic Gathering

Bring these cookies along to:

  • Backyard BBQs
  • Potlucks
  • School or church events
  • Picnics
  • Community events
  • Or just enjoy them at home on a summer afternoon!

They’re also a great baking activity for kidsโ€”fun, easy, and mess-free (mostly!).

Fun Variations to Try

Want to put your own spin on these cookies?

  • Use star-shaped cookie cutters for an extra festive touch.
  • Make cookie bars: Press the dough into a baking pan, bake, decorate the top, and slice into squares.
  • Swap the candy: No M&Ms? Try jelly beans, sprinkles, or candy-coated chocolates.
  • Add icing: Pipe on white stripes or use icing to help hold the candies in place.
  • Color the dough: Dye parts of the dough red or blue with food coloring for a pop of color.

Can You Make These in Advance?

Absolutely! These cookies are great for prepping in advance.

  • Make-ahead tip: Bake and decorate up to three days before your event. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • Freezing cookie dough? You can! Homemade dough freezes for up to two months. Just slice and bake when youโ€™re ready.
  • Freezing baked cookies? Yesโ€”store them in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Let them thaw before serving.

Tip: If stacking, use wax paper between layers so the M&Ms donโ€™t get smushed.

Ready to add a sweet splash of red, white, and blue to your celebration?

These Patriotic Flag Cookies are easy, fun, and sure to impress. So grab your cookie dough and M&Msโ€”itโ€™s time to bake up some star-spangled joy!
