We tend to neglect ourselves in the winter months. We’re too busy keeping warm and hunkering down. But, summer’s almost here, and it’s never too early to get ourselves ready to don sundresses and swimsuits. Use this handy checklist to get yourself in tip top shape for warm weather!
1. Hair
Winter can take its toll on our hair. Dry, cold air causes it to become dehydrated and even straw-like in texture. So what’s a girl to do? First and foremost, visit your stylist and have your ends trimmed and your style shaped up. If you color your hair, consider a lighter shade for summer or maybe add a few strategically-placed highlights. Invest in non-toxic shampoo and conditioner that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, and try to avoid blow-drying and heat-styling your hair if at all possible. Once a week, slather damp hair with coconut oil and cover it with a shower cap. After an hour, shampoo your hair twice or more to remove the oil. Conditioner will likely be unnecessary after this treatment. Follow these tips and enjoy gorgeous locks all summer long!
2.Skin
Just like our hair, our skin can also suffer during the cooler months. Dry, scaly skin can be a problem as can three months or more of neglecting your razor. Shave your legs and slather them with, you guessed it, coconut oil as soon as you step out of the shower. The skin on your hands and feet, as well as the rest of your body probably needs your attention as well. Coconut oil is cheap and comes in large jars at major warehouse stores. Coconut oil can be combined with other ingredients, such as shea butter and essential oils, and whipped with your mixer to create a luxurious, natural, and inexpensive lotion to use throughout the summer. Store it in a mason jar. Stock up on non-toxic sunscreen to protect skin from burning in the hot sunlight.

Maybe you maintained your manicure all winter long, but your toes may need tending to! Since we wear socks and close-toed shoes during the colder weather, our toes might appear unkempt come sandal season. Treat yourself to a pedicure to have the rough skin on your heels removed, your nails filed and polished, and a fun summer color applied. Try corals, pale pinks, and light metallic shades to make your digits look delightful!
4. Clothes
Before it gets too warm, take inventory of your summer clothes from last year. Once you’ve decided what you still find fashionable, try it all on to see if everything still fits. From there, figure out what’s still missing from your wardrobe, and create a list to use when shopping. Consult fashion magazines to check out what’s trendy this season, or go with your own unique style. Inspect your summer sandals and flip flops to see if they need to be repaired or replaced.
5. Beauty from the Inside Out
Once you’ve ensured that your outside is looking fabulous, remember to take care of your inside as well. Drink plenty of water all summer to stay hydrated and make your skin glow. Eat healthy food and take a walk every day to calm your spirit. Meditation, relaxation, mindfulness, and living in moment are all excellent forms of self-care. (Pick up our free self-care checklist.)
Winter can be brutal on our bodies and spirits. Dark, cold days and dry air all threaten our appearance and make us want to just stay home and hibernate. Warmer weather is full of promise and beckons us outdoors once again to frolic in the summer sun. Polish yourself up and get out there!
