Do you want to become your own boss? Let’s take a look at three of the most important topics you need to research if you want to start off on the right foot and have a better chance at success.

Want to Become Your Own Boss? Here Are 3 Things You Must Research First

More and more people, especially millennials and gen Z, are interested in starting their own businesses or working freelance rather than looking for traditional employment. There are many reasons for this, from the difficulty graduates have in finding jobs where they can make use of their knowledge and skills, to the fact that, thanks to the internet, it’s easier to become your own boss than ever before.

Whether you’re looking to eventually leave your current job to become an entrepreneur, or you’re approaching college graduation and like the idea of starting a business rather than entering a difficult job market, here are three things you should start researching now.

Become Your Own Boss

3 Things You Must Research if You Want to Become Your Own Boss

Compliance

If you want to start a business, one of the first things you’ll need to have is a good knowledge of what legal requirements, tax policies, and insurance needs relate to your location and industry.

You’ll need to find out how to register a business of the type you want to start and whether you’ll be subject to legal requirements outside of the state you are registered in (for instance, you’ll need to understand international laws if you plan to do business online with clients living all over the world).

You’ll also need to find out what types of business insurance is required or strongly recommended for your type of business, what it does and does not cover, and how much the insurance will cost for the size and type of company you’ll be creating. This business insurance glossary can be a good place to start if you want to get familiar with the terminology used in insurance policies.

Business Planning

Whether the you’re applying for a business loan, seeking out investors, or simply want to have a guide as you start your new business, you’ll need to know how to make a business plan.

Just the process of creating a business plan is helpful as an exercise in its own right, even if you don’t need to actually use it to convince anyone of your venture’s viability. This is because it prompts you to think about the many different aspects of starting, operating, and growing your business.

Marketing

Your business won’t succeed if you your target market isn’t aware it exists.

While marketing may be a part of your business plan, it is an extensive topic that will require a lot of research and decision making.

Social media and general internet marketing can be a good focus for many small businesses, but for more locally-focused businesses — for instance, if you want to open a hair salon, a boutique, or a bar — offline marketing is also likely to play a role in making your business successful.

It’s never too early to start learning all that you can about these topics, as you begin planning your new business venture.

And, unlike past generations, we’re lucky that the internet has a plethora of free (and paid) information on all of these topics. This will give you a good start as you research everything that’s required when becoming your own boss.

If you decide to go forward, be sure to seek out reputable professionals when you need to–think tax accountants and lawyers. This way, you’ll be sure to start your business off on a firm footing and avoid any pitfalls.
