You’re mostly likely reading this article because your’re wondering “how do I check the status of my tax ID order?” If so, click to jump to your answer. If you’re wondering what IS a tax ID or EIN, keep reading to see if this is something you need.

Most business owners will need to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) at some point. This number is an important one. Think of it as you would your social security number, but for your business. You will need to supply this information when filing taxes, for example, or attempting to fill out business paperwork, or opening up a business bank account.

Even many one-person small businesses prefer to use an EIN versus using their own social security number as a matter of security. If you run your business as a sole proprietor, you can use an EIN and avoid giving out your EIN to companies you work for in most situations.

In order to ensure that you have your EIN available when you need it, make sure to fill out an EIN application as soon as possible. As with many goverment processes, it may take a little time to get your EIN, so letโ€™s look at how you can check the status of your tax ID order.

EIN Application

You can fill out an Employer Identification Number (EIN) online at the IRS website. To get an EIN, your principal business must be located in the United States or U.S. Territories. The application, requirements, and instructions are on the site.

One thing to note is that it can take up to two weeks for your EIN to become active in the IRS system. And, while you’re waiting for the number to become active, unfortunately, there isn’t a way to check the status of your application on the site.

You can phone the Internal Revenue Service, but it can often be difficult to reach someone, which leaves you waiting and wondering–not an ideal situation if you’re in a time crunch.

To make things a bit simpler, some people prefer to use a trusted third party to complete and submit their application. Let’s take a look at that process for obtaining your EIN or tax ID number.

When you fill out an online EIN application with Gov Doc Filing, for example, they’ll immediately begin to process your order. That means that you usually receive your EIN much sooner than the IRS estimates โ€“ you can often receive it within 24 hours of submitting your application!

This also means that you can check your order at any time throughout the process. All you need is your order number or email address, and you can log in to check on the status of your tax ID order.

Getting an EIN for your business isn’t complicated and has many benefits. However, it’s always best to apply for one before you need to use it to allow processing time. However you choose to apply for your EIN, whether directly with the IRS or through a trusted third party, don’t wait if this is something your business needs.
