Tips to help you decide on your goals for the new year
Before you can achieve anything, you need a clear idea of what exactly you want to accomplish. You also need to know what steps you’ll take to get there, since no goal can be achieved simply through wishful thinking.
You’ll need to come up with actionable steps that will help you reach your end goal, so at the end of the year, you can see if you’ve hit the mark.ย ย
If you need a little help, here are some tips…
How to decide on a new year’s resolution
As you decide how you’d like the coming year to be different or better than the last, you may want to consider these questions:
- Looking back on the past year, what didn’t you like? Do you know what you could’ve done to change things, or change your reaction to those circumstances?
- What part of your life needs improvment? (work/life balance, emotional health, physical health, finances, etc.)
- Are there any relationships you’d like to improve?
- What do you want to have achieved by this time next year?
- What new skills would you like to acquire?
- What new hobbies would you like to try?
- Is there anywhere you want to travel?
- What longer-term projects do you need to complete (or start)?
Set your goals with these ideas in mind
1.Goals should make your life better
Ask yourself if this goal will make you happier or healthier (mentally or physically)? Will it improve your financial situation or improve your relationships? Understand why you’ve set this goal, and be sure it will improve your life.
2. Goals should be specific
Don’t just tell yourself that you’ll “lose weight.” Set an achievable goal, break it down into steps, and make sure it’s realistic. Otherwise, your enthusiasm will wane almost immediately.ย
And, don’t forget to celebrate the successes along the way, as you tackle each small step toward your larger goal.
3. Goals should be realistic
As we just mentioned, if your goals aren’t obtainable, you’ll become overwhelmed and give up quickly.
You can’t expect to learn a new skill in a week or become fluent in a new langage in a few months. Be realistic, and take pride in the fact that you’re making progress!
4. Goals should be broken down into actionable steps
Again, don’t forget to break down your larger goals into actionable, small steps. Instead of setting a goal to “learn French,” set a goal to spend a set amount of time per day on your language app.
Or, if you’re trying to get fit or lose weight, challenge yourself to walk 30 minutes a day five days a week.ย
