Beach Treasures Keepsake Jar -- Easy DIY | MomsWhoSave.com If your family is like mine, you usually come home from the beach with more than a few sea shells and other treasures. Since we’ve visited the beach every year since moving to the East Coast, our collection is growing rapidly!

Here’s an easy project parents and children can do together that will turn those shells, sea glass, and other finds into a lasting memento of your beach vacation.

You’ll need:

  • A small glass jar including the lid (remove the label) We used an olive jar.
  • Whatever you’ve collected from the beach that will fit into the jar–for example:
    • small or broken sea shells
    • sea glass
    • small or broken starfish or sand dollars
    • sea weed
    • small pebbles
  • Hot glue gun

1. Begin by filling your jar with your beach treasures, paying attention to keep the most interesting and colorful items facing the outside. If you need to adjust something as you go, use a large “un-bent” paperclip to reach the items inside the jar.

2. When you’ve filled the jar to the top, put on the lid, adding a few dabs of hot glue from your glue gun if you’d like.

3. To finish off your creation, depending on the size of the jar, you can glue a shell, a piece of sea glass, or a stone to the top of the lid–or several as you see in one of our photos.

4. You can also paint the lid of your jar if you’re feeling extra crafty!

My grand kids just went to the beach for the 4th of July and my daughter-in-law was looking for ideas for all the shells they found. I’ll have to let her now about your idea!! Thanks

I thought of Maya Angelou when I watched the inaug I thought of Maya Angelou when I watched the inauguration. She was the poet at Bill Clinton's inauguration, if anyone remembers. This is the link to that reading youtube.com/watch?v=8ecWterxtq0 ("On the Pulse of Morning") She lived not far from me, and when she died, I went to her estate sale. I regretted not going to see her speak while I had the chance and wanted to buy something that belonged to her. We were actually able to go into her house. People were picking through her dishes and rooms full of books, and there were paintings and scuptures she'd been gifted that were selling for thousands of dollars. Her bedroom was closed off, but it felt like we shouldn't be there. For the few who don't know it, this is probably her most famous poem and my favorite: Still I Rise You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise. Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
