Lifting weights, also known as strength training, isn’t just for body builders. In fact, anyone with the desire to be healthy should be strength training.
Don’t worry, though! You won’t resemble the Hulk or that super huge guy at your gym who looks like he could lift a bus with one hand. To attain that kind of bulk requires a very special type of training and eating plan. The strength training I’m talking about is very different. It leads, not to bulk, but to a strong, defined, lean body.
To reap the following benefits of strength training, you simply need to lift weights a couple of times a week. Even just once a week will make a positive influence on your health. So don’t let the idea of huge rippling muscles deter you from the free weights (unless, of course, that’s what you’re after)! Studies have found that strength training could help with your fight against depression. While lifting, your body releases the feel-good hormones that make you happy and boost your energy. And, rather ironically, it helps you sleep better, too!

Muscle likes to burn up those extra calories even when you aren’t doing anything at all. After a weight lifting session, which doesn’t need to be any longer than 30 minutes, your body will continue to burn calories long after you’re done.

Muscle mass diminishes as we age. And so does the density of our bones. Strength training reverses both of these problems. Yep, strength training could actually make you smarter! It, at the very least, sharpens your cognitive ability. Studies have even found that those with cognitive impairment showed significant improvement in just six months of regular weight training. Think Alzheimer’s prevention!

Maybe all you’re really looking for is an excellent way to lose weight and keep it off. Strength training is it! Combined with good nutrition and the aerobic exercise of your choice (here’s why I think you should consider running!), lifting weights will jumpstart your weight loss journey and keep it going strong until you’re fitter and leaner than you’ve ever been before.
Are you wondering how you’re going to take advantage of all these benefits of strength training? While a gym membership is nice, it’s not required. And if you’re not ready to spend the money on a whole set of fancy weights, that’s ok. You can start right at home with your own body weight. Various forms of squats, push-ups, lunges, and planks make for the perfect strength training routine, no equipment or membership required.
