There are so many great reasons to start running! Of course, it’s terrific exercise, but running has lots of other benefits too. Keep reading to learn more!

Reasons to Start Running

Have you ever driven past a runner, rolled your eyes, and muttered something about them being crazy? Maybe you’ve legitimately wondered why on earth a human being would run without someone chasing them. With roughly 60 million people running in the United States alone, there must be a good reason or two for doing it.

Believe it or not, there are several good reasons to start running! The following list is by no means exhaustive, but they’re some of my favorite reasons. And if all of these terrific benefits that come from running get you thinking that maybe all those crazy runners are on to something, I’ve accomplished my goal for writing this.

5 Reasons to Start Running

1. Running Improves Productivity and Energy Levels

Do you ever find yourself lagging in the middle of the day? That mid-afternoon tiredness can do a serious number on your productivity. Running regularly can vastly improve your energy levels throughout the day, thus making it easier to stay on task. You simply don’t have time not to run! And, running increases the blood flow to your brain so you’re able to think more clearly–kind of amazing, isn’t it?

2. Running Improves Mood

There’s all sorts of science behind what causes the “runner’s high.” There’s that neurotransmitter called serotonin which, simply put, makes you feel better. When you run (or exercise in general), your brain produces more serotonin, giving you a nice boost in your mood. Running can even go so far as to ward off depression and anxiety. Feeling stressed out? Running could be just the quick fix you’ve been looking for. [Also read: Try One of These Stress-Relieving Hobbies]

3. Running Improves Sleep

If you could use a deeper, more restful night’s sleep, a good run could be the way to go. If you’re an all-out insomniac, running can definitely improve your sleep, but consistency is key. If you don’t suddenly have an amazing night’s sleep after your very first run, don’t give up! Your dreams will thank you.

4. Running Improves Waist Lines

Running allows for a significant calorie burn in a short amount of time. It also can stimulate “afterburn” which is the continued burning off of calories even after you’ve finished running. Yes, please. And with serotonin giving you that “runner’s high,” you’ll want to go for another run. And another. And another. Hello, waist line.

5. Running Improves Overall Health

Your mental health, your emotional health, and your physical health are all positively impacted by running. There are even studies out there proving that running can extend your life! It increases bone mass, lowers the risk of certain cancers, and can even make you smarter. There are so many reasons to start running! It really is the ultimate healthy drug we all should be taking.

So, the next time you see that crazy runner out there, give them a quick wave and a smile as you run on by.

I don’t run very often, but I can see both the benefits and disadvantages! I know that it would be hard on my already weak knees, but it also strengthens them.
