We’re all looking for more ways to cut down on waste. To do that, many of us focus on what we’re throwing away—and that’s important. But there’s another way to lessen our environmental impact, and that’s to repurpose and recycle. For example, we recommend always buying recycled paper and making other sustainable swaps whenever possible.
If you look at how paper is made, you’ll understand why it’s one of the most “recyclable” items. In fact, you can even make your own paper from recycled paper. It’s actually kind of a fun diy project.
When it was first invented, paper was made from a plant called papyrus or bamboo, and it was all handmade. Eventually paper spread west and north into Europe, and automated processes enabled it to move from handcrafted to machine-made.
Today, most paper originates as wood—in its first incarnation. But after that, paper gets recycled, washing and refining the original substance so that it can be combined, again, into paper. In the process, that recycling cuts down on water and air pollution.
Want to learn more about the creation of paper throughout history to the present? This graphic can help–and it’ll help you see why buying recycled paper is such a good idea!
