Summer is here, and we’re all getting ready for swimsuit season! And, just like every summer, there’s a lot of debate about ‘summer bodies.’ As a mom, you might be more concerned with outfitting the kids (and yourself) in gear that’s sun-safe, practical, and doesn’t break the bank–but who said you can’t be stylish, too? Here are our top tips to stay sun-safe while looking great at the pool this summer–and doing it all affordably!
Sun Safe Innovations
Staying safe in the sun is an absolute must. We’re inundated with sunscreen advertising everywhere, and finding a great, skin-friendly choice for you and your little ones needs to be a priority. With recommendations to reapply sunscreen every two to three hours, and use about a shot glass-worth at a time on an adult skin, however, the cost can add up fast.
Luckily, more expensive isn’t always better. There are plenty of drug store brands recommended by top dermatologists that the whole family can use. Look out for ‘family’ sized packs to save some extra money, and be sure to keep the kids from getting sunburnt–even one bad childhood burn has been shown to greatly increase the risk of skin cancer later in life.Â
Don’t stop there, however! Swimsuit manufacturers have gotten a lot more sun-savvy over the years. Today you’ll find a wealth of shoulder-to-thigh styles for little ones, easy-wear rash guards in styles your kids will love, along with other innovations to keep even the most active little ones safe from burns.
A lot is being said in the press about ‘UPF’ fabrics. These can be great for families, as they guarantee a sun-safe rating, something like the familiar SPF system. But smart moms on a budget should know that many fabrics help ward off UV rays, even if they don’t have the fancy label. Look for robust, thicker fabrics in darker colors that don’t go transparent when wet. If you hold it to the light, evaluate how much sun comes through the fabric. If you aren’t seeing anything, then those harmful rays aren’t reaching you or your little one’s skin either.
And never underestimate the value of a great hat! While wide-brimmed beach hats look glamorous on fashionistas, while convenient broad-brimmed visor styles are great for active children and busy moms alike, staying put with minimal disruption no matter what you do. While you should probably add a pair of good sunglasses to the mix, it’s harder to keep them on your very little ones.
Suits that Look Great but Don’t Break the Bank
Swimsuits for moms have come a long way. No longer are you banished to dull and drab just because you’re not so keen to show off stretch marks, loose skin, or a c-section scar in a string bikini. The better news? Many brands cater specifically to budget-conscious mammas, and you can pick up something stylish for not a lot of money–think $50 and under for some brands!
As with swimwear for kids, adult swimwear has gotten a lot more sensible about sun protection and has evolved to showcase a far broader range of bodies too. So, if you prefer a swim dress, board shorts, tankini, or rashguard, you can definitely find something that you feel comfortable in and that looks amazing.
Nowadays, staying budget-friendly and sun-safe while still looking great is easier than ever. That means you can ditch that ratty old tee, and get in the pool with your little ones! The memories you make with them will last forever, and that’s what really counts in the end.
