Oat milk has become a superstar in the world of dairy alternatives thanks to its creamy texture and mild flavor that appeals to a wide range of tastes. Its versatility in coffee, baking, and cooking has made it a popular choice, especially for those eating a plant-based diet.

I love it on cereal and use it to make my own version of a Starbucks mocha. But what happens when you reach for that carton and realize it’s about to expire? Can you freeze oat milk, or will you have to let it go to waste?

The bottom line: While freezing oat milk is possible, it’s not the best option. Let’s talk about why that is and see if there are better alternatives.

Can You Freeze Oat Milk?

The Science of Freezing Oat Milk

Putting a carton of oat milk in the freezer might seem like a good idea. But, remember: freezing causes liquids to expand. This can be a problem for oat milk, which is a mixture of water, oats, and emulsifiers.

Here’s what happens when it freezes:

  • Water: When water freezes, it forms ice crystals. These crystals can change the smooth texture of oat milk.
  • Oats: Freezing can cause the oat particles to clump together, making the oat milk grainy.
  • Emulsifiers: These are what keep oat milk creamy and homogenous. Freezing can make them less effective, leading to separation.

Freezing Oat Milk (If You Absolutely Have To)

If there is a time where freezing is your only option. Here’s how to do it with the least amount of damage:

  • Use airtight containers: This helps prevent freezer burn and odor absorption.
  • Freeze in small portions: Smaller portions will, of course, thaw more quickly, and there will be less texture change.
  • Thaw gently: Once you’re ready to use the oat milk, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight. Shaking it well after thawing can help redistribute any separated components.

Better Alternatives to Freezing Oat Milk

Freezing oat milk is not ideal. There are better ways to make sure you always have oat milk on hand when you want it. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Try oat milk powder: This shelf-stable option offers a longer lifespan and can be easily reconstituted with water. Plus, it’s simple to prepare–and you don’t have to worry about expiration dates. You just make the amount you need when you need it.
  • Choose shelf-stable oat milk: Look for this oat milk on the grocery store shelf. It doesn’t need refrigeration until it’s been opened.

Bonus Tip: How to Store Oat Milk for Maximum Freshness

Store your oat milk in the back of the refrigerator, where it’s the coldest. This will help extend its shelf life. And don’t forget to close the carton tightly after each use to prevent contamination.

Wrapping Up: When it Comes to Oat Milk, Fresh is Best

While freezing oat milk is not impossible, it’s certainly not ideal, since freezing can affect both the texture and taste. To truly enjoy oat milk at its best, store it in the refrigerator and use it within about seven to 10 days. And, remember, shaking it well before using it helps ensure a good consistency.

So, there you have it! Now you know all about freezing oat milk (and why it’s best to avoid it if possible). Your best bet? Choose fresh oat milk when you can—store it properly and use it promptly to enjoy that smooth, delicious taste every time.
