We’re all looking for more ways to cut down on waste and boost our recycling. To do that, many of us focus on what we’re throwing away—and that’s important. But there’s another way to boost our recycling, and that’s to purchase products, such as paper, that are recycled. To understand paper, it helps to know more about how paper is made.
When it was first invented, paper was made from a plant called papyrus or bamboo, and it was all handmade. Eventually paper spread west and north into Europe, and automated processes enabled it to move from handcrafted to machine-made.
Today, most paper originates as wood—in its first incarnation. But after that, paper gets recycled, washing and refining the original substance so that it can be combined, again, into paper. In the process, that recycling cuts down on water and air pollution.
