I love to travel, but I love coming home too. Whether it’s after a beach weekend, or a long summer vacation, there’s nothing like coming back to your own home and familiar routine. Everyone has that special place in the house where they go to relax and unwind–even if it’s just after a long day at work or school.

And, since I work from home, my house is also my office, so I try very hard to make it comfortable–it’s where I spend almost all of my time!

Unfortunately, there are many families who don’t have a comfortable house to come home to. That’s because there is a growing housing crisis in the U.S. Many families are having trouble affording a home or are homeless. Did you know that one in four households in the U.S. pays more than 30 percent of their income for housing and may have difficulty affording necessities such as food or clothing? And, there is virtually nowhere in the U.S. where a full-time employee earning minimum wage can afford even a one-bedroom apartment. Even two such jobs won’t rent a two-bedroom apartment in 29 states and the District of Columbia.

I was a single mom for many years, and even with a bachelor’s degree, making more than minimum wage, there were times early in my career, half of my take-home pay went toward rent. That’s one reason this issue is important to me. Everyone should have decent, safe, and affordable housing.

how to help homeless families

Habitat for Humanity has been on the forefront of this issue for the past 40 years as one of the biggest affordable housing providers. They change lives, building self-reliance in the U.S. and around the world through their amazing organization! Their “Home is the Key” campaign launched earlier this month in Nashville, Tennessee with the help of generous sponsors and the Scott Brothers from HGTV. There are three easy ways you can get involved, and I hope you will!

Support Habitat for Humanity’s Home is the Key Campaign

1. Visit Habitat for Humanity to make a donation here.

2. Shop:

  • At Home Stores: In addition to featuring Habitat as the register fundraiser throughout April, At Home will sell specialty patio umbrellas and spring coaster sets in-store to give back to Habitat.
  • Chico’s FAS: Donate in-store or online at any of the Chico’s FAS brands mentioned below, in addition to purchasing specialty products that give back at each store:
    • Chico’s: Every sale of the basic essential slub tee from April 1 – May 31 will support Habitat.
    • White House Black Market: Proceeds from every Comfort Stretch Ankle Pant sold April 23-May 31 will go to Habitat.
    • Soma Intimates: From April 23-May 31, each Cool Night Pajama separate sold will support Habitat.
  • O’Cedar: From April 1 – June 15, O’Cedar will donate $1 to Habitat for Humanity for every ProMist® Max spray mop sold.
  • Kum & Go Convenience Stores: 10¢ of every specially marked water bottle sold will be donated to Habitat, and customers will have the opportunity to donate additional funds at checkout.

3. Share

  • You can really make an impact by sharing, and it costs you nothing! Nissan will donate $1 every time #HomeIsTheKey is shared on social media in April. Do your part, and share the #HomeIsTheKey on your social media accounts!
  • Building on an 18-year partnership with Habitat, Schneider Electric will promote the campaign, and drive donations through its social channels throughout the month.
  • Other corporate partners, including HGTV and iHeart, have joined to spread the word and rally their customers to support Habitat as well.
  • Visit Habitat for Humanity for more information. You can follow them on social media here:  Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube.
