Are You in Control of Your Asthma, or is it in Control of You? Be the Boss of Your Asthma!

Disclosure: This post is part of a paid sponsorship by Teva Pharmaceuticals. All opinions are my own.

I ran across this quote some time ago: “You have exactly one life in which to do everything you’ll ever do. Act accordingly.” I absolutely love that quote, and I try to always keep it mind. I don’t want to waste one day of my life being unhappy, and I definitely want to get out and experience as much of the world as I can.

For many people, including members of my own family and extended family, health issues sometimes keep us from enjoying life to the fullest. If you’re living with uncontrolled asthma, you know there’s nothing worse than having to miss events with family and friends, feeling like you’re always at the doctor’s office, or even making trips to urgent care or the emergency room. Sometimes it feels like even though you’re doing everything right, like avoiding asthma triggers, you just aren’t making progress when it comes to your day-to-day fight against your asthma symptoms. You may even be on multiple medications or medication meant to prevent asthma attacks and you wonder why it’s not working.

In my own family I can think of sudden trips to urgent care, missed birthday dinners and time lost from work. If you’re struggling to manage your asthma symptoms, you’re not alone. According to the CDC, nearly nine million adults in the United States have inadequately controlled asthma. It’s possible you may have a more severe form of the disease called severe eosinophilic asthma or S.E.A. With S.E.A., despite taking their medications as prescribed and avoiding known asthma triggers, patients may still struggle to manage their symptoms completely.

Be the Boss of Your Asthma is a national educational program that aims to raise awareness of severe eosinophilic asthma, or S.E.A. The program has a variety of resources, including an asthma fact sheet and doctor visit checklist, that can help you better identify the signs and symptoms of S.E.A. and become your own #AsthmaBoss! Don’t miss out on life and all the things you love! Take charge of your life and your health! It starts with learning more and working with your doctor.

Are you in control of your asthma, or is it in control of you? Find out more at Be the Boss of Your Asthma.

Be the Boss of Your Asthma is sponsored by Teva Pharmaceuticals and was shaped by several leading respiratory patient advocacy organizations in addition to AAN and AAFA, including the Association of Asthma Educators, the Severe Asthma Foundation and the Global Allergy and Asthma Patient Platform.

I thought of Maya Angelou when I watched the inaug I thought of Maya Angelou when I watched the inauguration. She was the poet at Bill Clinton's inauguration, if anyone remembers. This is the link to that reading youtube.com/watch?v=8ecWterxtq0 ("On the Pulse of Morning") She lived not far from me, and when she died, I went to her estate sale. I regretted not going to see her speak while I had the chance and wanted to buy something that belonged to her. We were actually able to go into her house. People were picking through her dishes and rooms full of books, and there were paintings and scuptures she'd been gifted that were selling for thousands of dollars. Her bedroom was closed off, but it felt like we shouldn't be there. For the few who don't know it, this is probably her most famous poem and my favorite: Still I Rise You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise. Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
