what is sleep apnea

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes the sleeper to have one or more breathing pauses while sleeping. This happens when an individual’s throat muscles relax too much and then suddenly collapse, cutting off your oxygen supply. Thus, this lack of oxygen in your body results in your awakening throughout the night, and you find it hard to fall asleep again.

In fact, this sleeping disorder can affect anyone. If you are having a difficult time getting a restful night’s sleep every night, you must make an appointment with your doctor right away. Always remember that only an expert can diagnose and treat sleep apnea.

Once diagnosed with sleep apnea, there is nothing to worry about because there are various treatments and tools, like a sleep apnea mask, that can work for you. Treating this disorder can be frustrating at times, but if you implement these four helpful ways to treat sleep apnea, you’ll be able to improve your sleep and even boost your overall well-being.

Lose weight if needed

Some people who suffer from sleep apnea are overweight or obese. If you are one of these, try shedding some pounds. You need to lose at least 10 percent of your weight to cure your apnea by 30 percent. You can also join a lifestyle counselling or diet program that will surely help you have a happier and healthier lifestyle.

Avoid alcohol and stop smoking

Everyone knows that drinking too many alcoholic beverages and smoking are bad for your health. It could worsen any diseases or disorders you might have, including sleep apnea. So, be sure to limit your alcohol intake and stop smoking to improve your sleep apnea symptoms. Once you cut these bad habits out, you will begin to have more restful sleep at night, and you will improve your breathing problems.

Eat nutritious food

Itpays to eat healthy all the time, whether you are suffering from a disorder or not. You have to ensure that you watch the food you consume, because unhealthy meals are most likely to cause you different diseases, like sleep apnea. When you are tired and don’t get enough sleep, you crave food with more carbohydrates or fats and simply eat whatever you want. This might be a bad habit if you want to treat your sleep apnea. Therefore, make it a point to eat nutritious food every single day.

Create a good evening routine to prepare for sleep

Since sleep apnea makes it hard for you to get enough sleep, make sure you have an evening routine to help you prepare for sleep. You need to stick to it, and it will definitely improve your sleep in the long run. Additionally, you have to find out the right sleeping position for you, so you won’t have a hard time breathing while dozing off.

Indeed, sleep apnea is a disorder that you cannot simply ignore. You have to follow the essential tips mentioned above to treat it effectively. You’ll get better quality sleep when you are able to practice these good habits.
